Welcome to AARD 2017
We are pleased to invite you to the 2017 African Archaeology Research Day (AARD) meeting, which will be hosted on Saturday 25 November at the Department of Archaeology, University of York.
The African Archaeology Research Day has been an annual event in the UK since 2002 and the first meeting held at the University of Oxford. The meetings are informal and are aimed at encouraging both undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as established academics, to present their research. They include plenty of time for informal discussion. Since 2002, the conference has been led by various academics in the field, at different venues across the country. Last year’s event at the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies, University of Exeter, was extremely successful at showcasing the range of research being undertaken on Africa’s past. This year’s organising committee at York includes Stephanie Wynne-Jones, Daryl Stump, Carol Lang, and Tom Fitton.
We are keen to continue AARD’s tradition of championing current and up-and-coming research, and particularly encourage research students and Early Career Researchers to present a paper or poster.
Presentations are encouraged on all aspects of African archaeology. The day will be organised into a series of parallel thematic sessions as follows:
1. Environmental archaeology in Africa
2. Landscapes and resources
3. Material culture and technology
4. Heritage management
5. Peoples and histories

Please send an abstract of approxomately 200 words, indicating the theme in which you would like your paper to be included (if known). All abstracts and enquiries should be sent to email@example.com
Deadline for submission of abstracts has been extended until 1st November 2017.
We are always open to new ideas, and the list of themes above should not be seen as exclusive. If you are interested in organising a session, or have one already developed, then please send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org
Each speaker will be allowed 15 minutes to present his or her paper with time afterwards for discussion and questions. PowerPoint will be available.
The conference will be held at King’s manor, where the Archaeology department is based. It is approximately 10 minutes’ walk from the train station in central York. Directions can be found on the university webpages at: https://www.york.ac.uk/about/maps/
There is some parking available at King’s Manor. Parking permits have to be purchased in advance at a cost of £5 for the day. If you need to book one of these please contact the conference team at email@example.com giving us your car registration.
