African Woodlands mini conference

By: Colin Mustaphi
January 9, 2014
Edinburgh, Scotland

Introduction:

Over January 8-9, 2014, REAL members from the University of York participated in a mini conference about biophysical and socioeconomic aspects of change and mangament of African woodlands. The conference was held at the Edinburgh Centre for Carbon Innovation (ECCI) and the Institute of Geography of the University of Edinburgh. Rob Marchant presented on themes related to palaeoenvironmental techniques for understanding ecosystem changes and scenario work that gives us insights about future trends in community development related to environment, ecosystem services and community well being.

The programme can be viewed here.

We thank the conveners and organisers for their great efforts!!

Goals of the conference:

● Help us identify who is currently researching the topic in the UK institutions
● Identify key issues and current research themes
● Allow us to discuss the issues from both a social and ecosystem science perspective, where appropriate
● Help us identify any areas for future work or integration between existing research

Themes:

● Woodland governance
● Community well being, justice, and equity
● Charcoal
● Global change impacts
● Heterogeneity of changes to Woodland ecosystems
● Multi-disciplinary research
