Hear from Dr. Abigail Croker at the upcoming Global Wildfire Collective webinar about fire in savanna ecosystems. Dr. Croker’s research applies a social-ecological systems framework to explore the opportunities for and challenges of decentralizing fire management across East and Southern African savanna-protected areas under future climate-socioeconomic change. Her research takes a historical institutionalist and ecological approach to understand how multiple systems variables interact to affect resilience in complex adaptive savanna ecosystems, integrating fieldwork, empirical research approaches, and systems modelling.

Wildfire in Savanna Ecosystems I: Definitions and Diversity
Savannas are fire-prone ecosystems that occur across multiple biomes and vary enormously in climate, vegetation, and human history. This webinar will explore the diversity of savanna ecosystems, the drivers of change affecting them, and the consequences of different management policies and approaches. Speakers will also identify gaps in science and data that must be addressed to improve our understanding of fire dynamics in these ecosystem types.
Moderated by:
- Dr. Alexandra Syphard, co-founder of the Global Wildfire Collective and Senior Research Scientist, Conservation Biology Institute
Speakers include:
- Dr. Caroline Lehmann – Chair of Plant Ecology and Biogeography, University of Edinburgh, Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh
